THE DISTILLERY
Orginially named Glenisla-Glenlivet at the time of its founding in 1891, this Keith-based distillery was renamed as Strathmill after being bought out by gin manufacturer W&A Gilbey in 1895.
Since 1997 the distillery belongs to Diageo and its spirit is used mainly for blended whiskies such as J&B. The distillery releases official single malt whiskies on rare occasions with the most notorious recent release being the Flora & Fauna collection.
Strathmill is one of the few distilleries left in Scotland that operates a purifying reflux arm connected to the lyne arm of its spirit stills that carries back the heavier vapours. The resulting new make spirit is smooth, light and very well suited for long maturation.
THE WHISKY
This whisky has matured in a bourbon barrel for 26 years and bottled at cask strength (47.4% ABV).
In addition to the typical vanilla and honey notes typically associated with ex-bourbon aging, this Strathmill is slighly spiced on the palate with notes of camomille, bitter orange and ripe pear.
The finale is long and dry with notes of almond and bitter orange.
