The Distillery
The Glenlossie distillery was founded in 1876 near the town of Elgin (Speyside) by John Duff, Alexander Allen and H.M.S. Mackay. They were joined 11 years later by John Hopkins, a London blender and owner of the Tobermory distillery. The distillery thrived up until the end of the 19th Century, to the point where John Duff decides to emigrate to South Africa to build the first whisky distillery on the Continent. However, his project is blocked by local politics and after a brief stint in the USA he decides to return to Elgin.
The first half of the 20th Century is less rosy for Glenlossie. Indeed, following the closure of operations in 1914 due to the outbreak of World War I the distillery is acquired in 1919 by the Distillers Company Limited (DCL). The distillery would be later closed again in 1939 after the outbreak of World War II due to malt rationing for the war effort.
In 1960 DCL decides to expand production capacity by adding 2 stills to the original 4. In 1971 additional production capacity is added with the construction of the Mannochmore distillery at the same site and the 2 distilleries have been sharing the same warehouse ever since.
The Glenlossie distillery has been used since its founding primarily to supply whisky for blending and has very rarely issued single malt releases. It was one of the first distilleries to have its stills fitted with purifier pipes. The pipes carry back the heavy alcohols from the lyne arm to the body of the still for further distillation which gives its new make spirit a more oily texture. The spirit also tends on the grassy/floreal side due to the long fermentation of the mash.
The whisky
This expression of Glenlossie has matured for 11 years in a bourbon barrel before being bottled at cask strength.
On the nose it has notes of beeswax and honey. On the palate it has an oily texture with millefleurs honey and cereal.
The finish is persistent with citrus and yeast which remind of an Indian Pale Ale.
