ABOUT THE BONS BOIS CRU
The Bons Bois cru (one of the six officially recognised cognac crus) forms a broad outer ring around the Charente and Charente-Maritime, touching the Atlantic in places. Sandy soils (often mixed with clay and eroded sandstone from the Massif Central) lie under pine and chestnut forests and catch both maritime breezes and inland warmth.
Sandy terroir warms quickly and drains fast, so grapes ripen a little earlier and yield wines with softer acids. That, in turn, means eaux-de-vie that matures faster than those from the chalky Champagnes (typically hitting their stride in 10-15 years as opposed to several decades).
THE COGNAC
This particular expression of the Bons Bois cru was distilled in 1984 and bottled in 2025 at cask strength (45.2% ABV).
On the nose the cognac emanates notes of ripe orchard fruit and violet.
On the palate the texture is silky with moderate structure. The orchard fruits and violets felt on the nose become mixed with the vanilla and spices from the cask. However, in spite of the rather long aging and the goȗt de terroire usually associated with Bon Bois cognacs, surprisingly it is the fruity notes that persist with a little brine making this cognac an effortless sip.
We can imagine ourselves drinking a dram of this cognac after a seafood plateau as a pairing to a crème brȗlèe or a tarte tatin with a dollop of cinnamon ice cream.
